Next morning Marie had disappeared. She was found two days later, naked and quite dead. A silver chain she wore had turned black. There was a knife in one of her hands and her head rested on the other. She had died of exposure and exhaustion in the place where the spirits of the dead are said to roam: perhaps she had answered their call that moonlit night when she had walked out, unseen and unheard, to die on their ancient ground.
